Tunnel Gully from Remutaka Incline – Sunday 28 April 2024
Participants: Margaret, Nigel, Laura, Mike & Nathan
Five of us set off on a perfect weather day for tramping – blue skies and no wind, although it
was a bit chilly in the shade to start with. We parked one car on the Kaitoke Loop Road at
the end of Station Road and then we all piled into the other car to drive around to our
starting point at the Remutaka Incline.
It was a nice flat walk to start with for 2-3km along the Remutaka Incline and then we
headed up Goat Rock Road, a long gentle climb with a few stops along the way to remove
extra clothing. Some of us stopped to look for a couple of geocaches along the way. Once
we reached Station Road we decided we would carry on down towards Tunnel Gully so we
could have lunch in the sun at the picnic table along the way. After lunch we continued on
to Tunnel Gully where we went for a walk through the tunnel. Time was getting on so we
headed back along Station Road and continued on until we reached Kaitoke Loop road
where we squeezed back into one car to head back to our starting point and spread out into
two cars for the journey back home.
The nearly 16km walk was easy underfoot all the way and the climbs not excessive.
Although the bush in most places was not spectacular, it was an enjoyable walk in an area
that was new to most of the group. We met a number of mountain bikers along the way,
plus a couple of people riding horses. The nearby gliding club and rifle range were both in
action so we got to see some gliding by, and heard a few bangs.
